This remarkable gothic cathedral, which was begun in 1907 and finally completed in 1990, is gloriously situated out of the centre of Washington and is approached by driving up what Stephen calls `Embassy Row` because all the embassies are located in this area of the city. Stephen draws the west front of the cathedral from a park bench on the lawn in front of the building.
