San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice Drawing
One evening, Stephen and I walk over to the waterfront where the gondolas are moored for the night. In front of us, across the lagoon, the Palladian facade of San Giorgio is illuminated. It resembles a stage-set which has been lit as a backdrop. It is impossible to see the window in the dome and the twin towers beyond. The tall campanile is visible but the buildings to the left of the front elevation of the church are merely shapes in the darkness. The acute sensitivity of Stephens visual perception is such that his pen notes what is invisible to the ordinary human eye. What I am seeing is little short of a miracle.
